Delmonico potatoes

Posted on October 5, 2023

Potatoes Delmonico is a classic and delicious potato dish that features thinly sliced potatoes layered with a creamy, cheesy sauce and baked to perfection. Here’s a basic recipe to get you started:

Ingredients:

For the Potato Layers:

  • 4 large russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced (about 1/8-inch thick)
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Cheese Sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Prepare the Potato Layers: In a large skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant. Add the sliced potatoes to the skillet, season with salt and pepper, and cook for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they begin to soften. Remove from heat and set aside.
  3. Prepare the Cheese Sauce: In a separate saucepan, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Once melted, add the flour and whisk continuously for 1-2 minutes to make a roux. Gradually pour in the milk while continuing to whisk, and cook until the mixture thickens and becomes smooth, about 5-7 minutes. Reduce the heat to low and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese and grated Parmesan cheese until they are fully melted and the sauce is creamy. Season with salt, pepper, and paprika (if using). Remove from heat.
  4. Assemble the Dish: In a greased baking dish (approximately 9×13 inches), layer half of the cooked potatoes in an even layer. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes. Repeat with the remaining potatoes and cheese sauce.
  5. Bake: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for about 30-35 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the sauce is bubbly.
  6. Finish Under Broiler (Optional): If you’d like a golden-brown crust on top, you can remove the foil and broil the dish for an additional 2-3 minutes until it’s lightly browned.
  7. Serve: Allow the Potatoes Delmonico to cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with additional grated Parmesan cheese or fresh herbs if desired.

This creamy and cheesy potato dish makes a great side dish for a variety of meals, especially during the holidays or special occasions. Enjoy!
