Texas toast sloppy joes

Posted on October 2, 2023
Texas toast sloppy joes are a hearty and flavorful twist on the classic sloppy joe sandwich. To make the best Texas toast sloppy joes, follow this delicious recipe:Ingredients:

For the Sloppy Joe Filling:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef or ground turkey
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 bell pepper, finely chopped (optional)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder (adjust to taste)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1/4 cup water
  • Olive oil for cooking

For the Texas Toast:

  • 8 slices of thick-cut Texas toast or garlic bread
  • Butter for spreading

For Serving:

  • Sliced cheese (optional)
  • Pickles, coleslaw, or your favorite toppings

Instructions:

  1. In a large skillet, heat a bit of olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and bell pepper (if using) and sauté until they start to soften, about 2-3 minutes.
  2. Add the ground beef or turkey to the skillet. Break it up with a spatula and cook until browned and cooked through. Drain any excess fat if necessary.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  4. Add the ketchup, tomato paste, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, chili powder, salt, and black pepper to the skillet. Mix everything together.
  5. Pour in the water and stir to combine. Simmer the mixture over low heat for about 10-15 minutes, or until it thickens and the flavors meld together. If it becomes too thick, you can add a little more water.
  6. While the filling is simmering, prepare the Texas toast. Spread a layer of butter on one side of each slice.
  7. Heat a griddle or a large skillet over medium-high heat. Place the buttered Texas toast slices on the griddle, buttered side down. Cook until golden brown and toasted.
  8. Flip the toast slices and, if desired, add a slice of cheese on top of each one. Continue cooking until the cheese is melted, and the other side of the toast is golden brown.
  9. Once the sloppy joe filling is ready, spoon a generous portion onto one slice of the Texas toast.
  10. Top with another slice of Texas toast, cheese side down, to create a sandwich.
  11. Serve your Texas toast sloppy joes with your favorite toppings, such as pickles, coleslaw, or extra ketchup if desired.

Enjoy your delicious Texas toast sloppy joes, which are a flavorful and satisfying twist on the classic sloppy joe sandwich!
