Posted on October 1, 2023

Homemade apple fritters are a delightful treat that combines tender chunks of apple with a sweet and crispy batter, often dusted with powdered sugar. Here’s a recipe for making delicious homemade apple fritters:

Ingredients:

For the Apple Fritters:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2/3 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups peeled, cored, and diced apples (about 2 medium apples)
  • Vegetable oil for frying

For the Glaze:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Batter:

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

2. Make the Wet Mixture:

  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla extract until well combined.

3. Combine Wet and Dry Mixtures:

  • Pour the wet mixture into the dry mixture and stir until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; a few lumps are okay.
  • Gently fold in the diced apples.

4. Heat the Oil:

  • In a large, deep skillet or a Dutch oven, heat about 2-3 inches of vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C) over medium-high heat. You can also use a deep fryer if you have one.

5. Fry the Apple Fritters:

  • Using a spoon or ice cream scoop, carefully drop portions of the apple fritter batter into the hot oil. Be cautious not to overcrowd the pan.
  • Fry the fritters for about 2-3 minutes per side, or until they are golden brown and crispy.
  • Use a slotted spoon to remove the fritters from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.

6. Make the Glaze:

  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract to make the glaze. Adjust the amount of milk to achieve your desired glaze consistency.

7. Glaze the Fritters:

  • While the apple fritters are still warm, dip them into the glaze to coat them evenly.
  • Place the glazed fritters on a wire rack or parchment paper to allow any excess glaze to drip off.

8. Serve:

  • Serve the homemade apple fritters warm, and enjoy!

These apple fritters are a delicious treat that’s perfect for breakfast, brunch, or dessert. The combination of sweet, crispy batter and tender apples is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.
