Salisbury Steak Recipe

Posted on October 1, 2023

Salisbury Steak is a classic comfort food dish made with ground beef patties served in a rich and savory mushroom gravy. Here’s a delicious Salisbury Steak recipe:

Ingredients:

For the Salisbury Steak Patties:

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef (80% lean)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onions
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

For the Mushroom Gravy:

  • 2 cups sliced mushrooms (white or cremini)
  • 1/2 cup diced onions
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions:

Prepare the Salisbury Steak Patties:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, finely chopped onions, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
  2. Mix the ingredients until well combined but avoid overmixing, as it can make the patties tough.
  3. Divide the mixture into 4-6 equal portions and shape them into oval or round patties, about 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick.

Cook the Salisbury Steak Patties:

  1. Heat a large skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat. Add a little oil if your beef is very lean.
  2. Place the patties in the hot skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until they are browned and cooked through.
  3. Once cooked, transfer the patties to a plate and cover them to keep warm.

Prepare the Mushroom Gravy:

  1. In the same skillet, add the butter and melt it over medium heat.
  2. Add the diced onions, sliced mushrooms, and minced garlic. Sauté for about 5-7 minutes until the vegetables are tender and the mushrooms are browned.
  3. Sprinkle the flour over the mushroom mixture and stir continuously for about 1-2 minutes to cook off the raw taste of the flour.
  4. Slowly pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce while stirring constantly.
  5. Continue to cook and stir until the gravy thickens and comes to a simmer. This should take about 3-5 minutes.
  6. Season the mushroom gravy with salt and black pepper to taste.

Combine and Serve:

  1. Return the cooked Salisbury Steak patties to the skillet with the mushroom gravy.
  2. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes to heat the patties through and allow the flavors to meld.

Serve:

Serve the Salisbury Steak patties with mushroom gravy over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles. You can garnish with fresh parsley if desired. Enjoy your homemade Salisbury Steak!
